Paul read law and completed his degree in Dutch Law at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He was an assistant professor at the Christian-Alberts-University in Kiel, Germany, whilst writing his doctoral thesis under the guidance of his thesis supervisor Prof. Dr. F.J. Säcker. Prof. mr L. Timmerman from the University of Groningen acted as co-supervisor for the Dutch part of his thesis. His dissertation covered the liability of the parent company with respect to debts incurred by its subsidiary under Dutch and German Law. 

He worked with Stibbe (formerly: Stibbe Simon Monahan Duhot) from 1993 until 1999 as Attorney-at-Law. Thereafter up until the beginning of 2002 he worked as managing partner of the German Desk of Steins Bisschop Meijburg & Co, affiliated with KPMG and KLegal. He joined VMW Taxand (Van Mens & Wisselink at that time) in mid 2002 as a partner to the firm. 

Paul works nationally and internationally in the field of Corporate Law. He heads the German Desk at VMW. His particular expertise lies in advising German clients who have economic interests in the Netherlands and Dutch clients who have economic interests in Germany, with emphasis on cross-border take-overs and other cross-border transactions, such as distributor agreements or agreements concerning branch offices. 

Additionally he has a wide experience in legal proceedings and regularly acts for his clients in Court. 

Paul is a member of the Dutch-German Association of Lawyers, participant in the Dutch-German Lawyers Conference and member of IBA (International Bar Association). He regularly publishes papers on various subjects.

Paul practises in both the Netherlands as "advocaat" and in Germany as "Rechtsanwalt".
